In my opinion some of the old wives tales about "last ditch" Arisakas being unsafe came from people blowing up Japanese trainer and drill rifles that were never supposed to fire regular ammo. "Last ditch" Arisakas would have to lose quite a bit of strength to get "down" to the level of the US, British, and German rifles of the era. Bottom line is that there is no evidence that "last ditch" Arisakas are any less safe than any other milsurp rifle of the same age and condition, and in fact they had the strongest actions of all World War II bolt-action rifles. We had a big discussion about the alleged weaknesses of late war Arisakas in another thread. I have two late war Type 99 Arisakas made by Toyo Kogyo and they don't have chrome bores, although the overall fit and finish is still pretty good for late war Arisakas. There were several manufacturers and they didn't make changes at the same time. Is the bore chrome lined? I'm pretty sure that was deleted at some point, but when? Does anybody know if any "last ditch" rifles were chrome lined?
